HOW DOES LASER SPEED MEASUREMENT ACTUALLY WORK?

The police officer chooses the vehicle he wants to measure in the laser guns viewfinder. Then he presses the trigger and the laser sends impulses in the invisible-infrared part of the spectrum against this vehicle. The beam is emitted in very short intervals – pulses. If we aim the laser beam at a shiny object, it will be reflected back from it – Instantaneously. The reflected beam is captured by optics and a light-sensitive element – a photodiode – converts it into an electrical signal.

Based on the length of the pulse return time, the lidar calculates the distance to the object. The ratio of the distance traveled to the elapsed time is calculated from the average of several measurements, and the radar calculates the speed based on these values. The measuring point is most often the headlight, mask, or registration plate, which tends to be very shiny. By pressing the trigger, the device is activated and the vehicle’s speed is measured within about one to two seconds. The speed data will immediately appear on the display.

The laser is able to measure the vehicle up to a distance of 1 km, but by default, it is measured at a distance of 50-400 meters. A light-colored vehicle is easier to measure with lasers than a dark-colored vehicle. The technical parameters of laser pistols used in Europe vary in each country.

A portable radar detector can detect laser guns, however, it usually does not provide enough time for safe deceleration, The only 100% protection against laser speed measurement is a laser jammer.

HOW A PASSIVE RADAR DETECTOR WORKS

First, we will briefly explain the difference in the terms passive and active protection.

Talking about passive protection or passive radar detector in technical terms, such a device does not work as a transmitter and in no way interferes or blocks the functions of speed measuring devices.It simply detects the presence of measuring devices and alerts driver to ongoing speed checks.

The opposite is an active protection, which provides, just as its name predicts, active protection against potential threats.

DETECTION OF MICROWAVE RADARS

Radar detector is basically a radio receiver. Using an extremely sensitive antenna scans its surroundings in a search for specific frequencies. When this frequency is detected the device alerts the driver.

There is but a small catch, microwave signals are transmitted by various sources alongside the roads, eg. automatic doors at gas stations or adaptive cruise control systems, not only by law enforcement radars. Those false alerts need to be precisely identified and filtered.

Another physical aspect detector analyses is magnitude and duration of the signal, again very specific for speed measuring devices. Not to mention those devices differ depending on which country are you cruising.

DETECTION OF LASER-BASED SPEED MEASURING DEVICES

Sensor in the detector reacts on light pulses of specific wavelength and frequency. Its function is to alert the driver of active speed measuring via a laser device.
